IPCC | Climate Change 2023: Synthesis Report (Headline Statements): “More than a century of burning fossil fuels as well as unequal and unsustainable energy and land use have led to global warming of 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels.”
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ landmark speech (10 September 2018): ‘Climate change is the defining issue of our time – and we are at a defining moment… If we do not change course by 2020, we risk missing the point where we can avoid runaway climate change, with disastrous consequences for people and all the natural systems that sustain us.”
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC’s) Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (8 October 2018): The report finds that limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require “rapid and far-reaching” transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities.
Global net human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) would need to fall by about 45% from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching ‘net zero’ around 2050. This means that any remaining emissions would need to be balanced by removing CO2 from the air.
